BROADCAST BY ALHAJI ABUBAKAR SANI BELLO, GOVERNOR NIGER STATE AND CHAIRMAN, NORTH-CENTRAL GOVERNOR’S FORUM; ON THE STATE OF AFFAIRS ON THE COVID – 19 PANDEMIC IN NIGER STATE

29TH MARCH, 2020 My dear Nigerlites

am glad to brief you this afternoon on the state of affairs on COVID-19 pandemic in Niger State. You would recall that I was in Abuja for the Nigeria Governors Forum meeting and other National engagements between 17th to 18th March, 2020.As part of the guidelines of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) that all persons with history of contact with a confirmed case of Corona virus disease (COVID -19) should proceed on self-isolation.

I went on self-isolation and also directed all members of my State Executive Council and immediate Aides to proceed on self-isolation since they all had contact with me. Having spent 7 days in isolation, which is above the average incubation period for the virus, I undertook a test which came out negative. However, even though I tested negative, I intend to remain in self-isolation till the maximum incubation period to stay safe. Fortunately, Niger state has not recorded any confirmed nor suspected case of the COVID-19, but some of the people living in the state that have had contact with confirmed cases are already in self-isolation.

Furthermore, I empathize with all those have tested positive to the virus across the country. Moments like this calls for national unity, it is my belief that we will come out of this stronger.

Once again, I appeal to all Nigerlites to continue to embrace simple personal hygiene procedures as well as other precautionary measures laid out by the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) that would guard us against contacting the dreaded virus.

Once again, I appeal to all Nigerlites to continue to embrace simple personal hygiene procedures as well as other precautionary measures laid out by the Nigeria Centre for Diseases Control (NCDC) that would guard us against contacting the dreaded virus.

In furtherance to our effort of being prepared for any eventualities, I have directed that the State Task force on COVID -19 leave no stone unturned in the war against the epidemic. In line with WHO advice, we are currently doing the following:  Expanding, training, and deploying our health care and public health workforce to the relevant areas. Establishing a system that will find every suspected case at the community level.

Explore all avenues of establishing testing site in the state. We have identified, adapted, and equipped an Isolation Centre that will be used to treat any confirmed case.

We are also considering a total lockdown to restrict movement into the state in the next few days. Finally, my fellow Nigerlites, we are all in this war together and must therefore cooperate with relevant authorities to ensure containment of the virus. Thank you all
